Examples of Characteristics and usage of steel grades

Martensitic Stainless Steel

  • It is an Fe-Cr alloy, a stainless steel alloy containing 13% Cr.
  • It has heat treatment characteristics similar to most alloy steels and its wide range of mechanical properties can be achieved by appropriate heat treatment.
  • This type of steel belongs to the family of strong magnetic materials.

Ferritic

  • It is an Fe-Cr alloy that contains over 18% Cr and hardly generates a Y phase at high temperatures. It is basically a single-phase ferrite.
  • This type of steel will not undergo essential hardening even after heat treatment.
  • After annealing treatment, it can give full play to its softness, elongation and corrosion resistance, but it is as magnetic as martensite stainless steel.

Austenitic Stainless Steel

  • It is a Fe-Cr-Ni alloy, represented by 18Gr-8Ni steel, which is a non-magnetic single-phase austenite from room temperature to high temperature.
  • It will not be hardened by heat treatment.
  • This kind of austenitic stainless steel will produce work hardening and work induced phase transformation after cold working, so it can play a wide range of mechanical properties. Sometimes it exhibits magnetism.
  • By annealing through high temperature quenching and controlling the precipitation of carbides, the softness, elongation and corrosion resistance can be maximized.

Austenitic Ferritic Stainless Steel

  • It is a stainless steel with a mixed structure of austenite and ferrite.
  • High strength when heat treated.
  • Excellent corrosion resistance and superior stress corrosion resistance compared to austenitic stainless steel.
